You are absolutely correct. If I may add, up to a dose of 4 g/kg of body weight xylitol appears to be not lethal to dogs.

Xylitol also leads to a depletion of ATP in hepatocytes which, if severe enough, causes necrosis of liver cells. Though, hypoglycemia is the main reason for the observable symptoms of non-lethal xylitol poisoning in dogs.
