Yes, Mike, the interindividual differences are what gets lost in group-based statistics that compare group averages. The average participant does, however, not exist, nor is there an average patient or person.
What is far more astonishing is that we have the methods to make individuals participate in 1-person trials (the so-called single case experiment, also called N-of-1 study). The format is recognized as a gold standard by FDA and EMA, but in medicine, it remains largely unknown. That's why my team and I have operationalized N-of-1 for lay-person capable preventive lifestyle medicine.
