That could be one possible explanation. As a caveat, that study was not designed to test caregiving as a risk factor for dementia. Another, possibly more likely explanation, is that shared lifestyle choices may be to blame. After all, spouses do have a shared history of diet and exercise habits. But the infection theory hasn't been ruled out yet.
