"eating less than average" points to caloric restriction, which has been shown to extend lifespan and health span, at least in lab animals and non-human primates. The effects are largest in short-lived animals, but still significant in primates.

The "invest early on" observation is something I fully subscribe to. Though I realize that some not-so-prudent habits in young adulthood can be compensated for later. In my eyes, 40 is the watershed age to turn everything around.
