Research indicates that a single high-fat, high-carbohydrate (HFHC) meal can induce oxidative stress in some cells. Obese individuals experiencing more prolonged effects compared to lean subjects. This oxidative stress goes hand in hand with increased plasma endotoxin concentrations and expression of inflammatory markers. While such stresses also lead to compensatory upregulation of antioxidant enzymes, repeated intake of HFHC meals can aggravate lipid peroxidation and insulin resistance. Interestingly, prior endurance exercise can prevent the postprandial increase in ROS production in circulating inflammatory cells. So. With the holidays being close, it might be a good idea to go for a run right before stuffing oneself with turkey and treats.
