You raise an important issue (APC analysis) that I admittedly didn't have on my screen when writing the article. It strengthens the notion of insufficiency of the number of participants. Considering that Age=Period-Cohort, it is difficult enough to identify the contribution of each individually without making some assumptions. 108 participants are surely insufficient. And as you suggest, no matter how you slice it, DE-SWAN is just a crutch for interpreting cross-sectional data in a longitudinal way.
