You put your finger on a hot but rarely discussed topic: the variance of results between labs. There is a normal and statistically inevitable variance that affects lab results even if they use the same technique. But for many biomarkers, there exist different techniques that will yield sometimes conflicting results. A1c is no exception. I did not want to go too deep into this detail, as it would have overwhelmed readers. It has also been settled now that most if not all labs test to the same standards. Still, results may be affected by patients' biological variations of Hb which can bias results. Such variants are present in sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia, for example. However, I assume that their doctors are aware of these conditions and take them into consideration.
