On a personal note: Having lived most of my life in Europe and Asia, I'm always amazed when I read U.S. recipes (my wife is a passionate cook and baker, and she lets me in on the recipes she finds for counterchecking their nutritional value). Many recipes from the U.S. seem to do a sugar overkill. When she experiments by cutting down on the sugar, we still find the products plenty sweet.
