I was of the opinion, that calling the BMI a flawed diagnostic would be understood correctly, as much as calling the inch a flawed metric of time would be.

When Adolphe Quetelet developed the equation in 1835, he being a statistician was guided by the observation that

“the transverse growth of man is less than the vertical.” It was Ancel Keys who rebranded the Quetelet Index into the BMI in 1972.
