I know what you mean, Alina. There is this catchy analogy with drug addiction, that is, sugar being as addictive as heroin. It’s popular but the supporting evidence is rather thin. Once we disentangle the neurohormonal from the behavioral responses, there are substantial differences between drug addiction and the human response to sugar. Just ask yourself one question: when you have a craving for sweets, do you eat pure raw sugar? Probably you don’t. You rather opt for chocolate, cheesecake, or jelly beans. If you are addicted to heroin, you want it in its pure form. That’s just one of the aspects that aren’t picked up by the popular media. There are many more, and I thank you for highlighting this addiction aspect which triggered me to make it the subject of one of my next posts.

But one thing is for sure, many of us are consuming way too much sugar. And the desire for the foods that contain it is certainly one of the drivers of obesity.

Again, thanks for bringing it up, I’ll definitely write about it
