I fully agree with your "best bet" suggestion. Though I have encountered cases who had wildly different responses to what is considered a healthy diet. One example was very negative response to the Mediterranean diet (weight gain, insulin resistance etc.) that completely resolved after switching to a keto-diet. Cases like these go to show that there is no one-size-fits all approach to diets. Though that does not diminish the value of your "best bet" suggestion.
