I fully agree with you on the "refinement and concentration" aspect.
If I was an alien observer of mankind, I would come to the following conclusion: man evolved with a taste preference for sweet food. It was useful to drive them to, and recognize the foods that supply ready energy and are non-toxic. Man was intelligent enough to produce this energy supply, eliminating dependence on unreliable and seasonal supplies. But mankind is obviously not intelligent enough to organize that skill in a health-promoting way.
As a regular wine drinker, I'm lenient on moderate alcohol consumption, which is far from being an addiction. Of course, as you say, that's nothing for children.
