I enjoyed reading Macchiavelli (at least the English translation). Very underappreciated today, probably due to the bad connotation attached to his name.

One of the quotes that I remember and that has stayed with me for years (I paraphrase): For the prince, it is better to be feared than to be loved, for he can control fear but not love.
