From an evolutionary point of view, humans have never been exposed to a diet of isolated nutrients (like supplements, pro- and prebiotics). That supports your argument, that on a wholesome diet, you won't need any of those. And you touched on an interesting question: could supplementation actually harm you? We should explore that a little further.
