As an interesting aside: In gerontology, we have this antagonistic pleiotropy theory of aging. It postulates that genes that create a health/survival dividend in younger years may become detrimental at later years. This theory explains why aging can be considered to have a genetic cause but without the genes having been selected for the process of aging by evolution.
