As a replacement, both seeds will deliver substantially less VitE than germ and bran. But of course, the recipe is not necessarily to be followed religiously. I experimented some time ago with flaxseed, but I found it to leave a fishy aftertaste. But that's an entirely subjective experience and dislike.
